I have had ubuntu 8.4 installed since its release and all is well. Apart from now and again i have the same issue occuring.

1. The system will compleatly lock up and i can't do a thing to recover apart from switch off at the mains and re-boot.Seems to be more when i have Evolution running, or copying files etc!

2. all applications will close with out warning and the system will go to the user log-in screen. and when i log back in, i have to re-start all the apps i had running.

I have no idea what is causing this to happen. ANy advice would be great

I'm using Hardy I guess you mean Hardy?
cat /etc/issue
Ubuntu 8.04

I have also experienced hangs with evolution. The most recent hang was after upgrading the kernel. I compile my own kernels and they don't use modules and they don't use initramfs.

I have been able to kill the processes and restart. It may be related to checking mail on startup so I'm going to disable that and keep an eye on evo.
