W: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems

Have you tried what the last line says ?

I wonder if the OP is running into the bug which has been the subject of a few threads on the Forum concerning the host name file. To check, go to System>>Administration>>Network; click on unlock, enter password; select hosts tab. There should be several lines in it, the one to look at is the second one, which in mine begins 127.0.1.1. After that should appear only PCNAME (the name of your computer on any network, etc.). If there is anything else after it, delete it so that it reads 127.0.1.1 PCNAME. Close, and try your update again. The first line should read something like this, BTW: 127.0.0.1 localhost.

For whatever reason, it looks like the system is trying to connect to itself to find the repository URLs. I've a recollection of a similar problem right after 8.04 release that was resolved. Are you behind a router?

An "off the wall" thought; has your ISP started blocking ports, torrents, etc., within the past few days? I've read an article or two that indicates at least two here in the US have begun doing this in the past week or so.

Are you by any chance using any sort of proxy software?
Can you "ping archive.ubuntu.com"?
What happens when you "traceroute archive.ubuntu.com"?
Can you "wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/hardy/Release.gpg"?
What do you get form /sbin/ifconfig?

frank@frank-desktop:~$ wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/hardy/Release.gpg

What about proxies. Do you have "anon-proxy" or anything similar installed?
