That is good. We don't want the name being misused.

Ubuntu is a trademark as well. Trademarks are very important for large open source projects.

I think at some time in late 90's, either the word Linux (or our beloved Tux, I forget which) was trademarked by somebody and basically held for ransom, much Linus' and the rest of the Linux world's chagrin. The Linux community fought and won it back. Then LMI (http://www.linuxmark.org) was formed, to protect the Linux trademark.

According to the FAQ, you are not required to sublicense if you are making t-shirts, mugs, or merchandise. If you are offering Linux support services, or making a software product, you need to sublicense in order to market it as "something Linux".

The best derivative Linux name would be Spinux, lol.

mostly haters call it lunix, but lunix is actually a totally different system which just shows their ignorance.

lunix is for lunatics ;)

One also has to remember that a trademark is only applied to certain classes of "goods/services"... so you can have the same trademark for something totally unrelated.

Lunix is for people who want to put UNIX on their C64.
