I salvaged an old laptop (Sony Vaio XP 64MB) from the bin and I thought I would try and configure it as Linux on it to see what it's all about (born and bred on Wdws). So downloaded the file (ubuntu-8.04-desktop-i386.iso), burnt to CD and fired it up. Had a problem booting from the CD but somehow managed in the end. Now I've seem to have ended up with a dual boot (although I am sure I didn't select that option) and on selecting Ubuntu I just get a shell screen with prompt (initramfs). As I am not familiar with the various shell commands available could someone please advise how I just fire up the desktop.

Thanks,

The initramfs prompt is _not_ a shell prompt. Something's wrong, most likely ubuntu is not installed, or you have forgotten to remove the CD after installation.

Ubuntu will _not_ install with only 64Mb of RAM. You'd be better off trying DSL (Damn Small Linux) or Puppy Linux.

Ok thanks. I'll abandoned it then and have a go with the ones you suggested.
