View Full Version : [ubuntu] Full disk encryption + partitions

Hey everyone,

I'm researching partition schemes, encryption, and installation howtos in preparation for my first foray into Linux. But I have a few questions about Ubuntu's full disk encryption.

1) When selecting full disk encryption from the alternate install CD, can you still setup multiple partitions (all of which are encryption [except for boot])? Or will a single encrypted partition be created? While I want to secure my data through encryption, having different partitions seems helpful for backups, reinstalls, and upgrades. It would be a shame if you couldn't (easily) do both.

2) How does full disk encryption actually perform in day-to-day usage? There are plenty of howtos on using the text only installer to set up encryption, but few details on how the encrypted OS actually performs.

Thanks for your help and, if the Live CD is any indication, I'll love Ubuntu.
