Im trying to install xubuntu on my great quality cheapo laptop. I have 256mb ram so im using the alternate cd. After in get to the menu where it says xubuntu then if gives me options, install, check disk, (ect.) then when I press Install it goes to a scrambled looking screen and i have to turn it off and back on to get it to the menu. please help.

I think you should try the check disc option. Maybe the CD is corrupted. If it is, and you have the iso image on another computer, burn it again at a lower speed.

I also think you need to check the md5sum of the iso that was downloaded, together with the cd on which it was burned. Is there another OS on the machine you might use to check it?
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM is helpful in this regard.

What speed did you burn it at? Did you check the md5sum?

And, given your description of your computer, did you burn it on a CD-R (Imation works well for me) at 4x or slower?
