I have it :)
Very cool for a trial, and more impressive than I thought, even with 3/4s of the "parts" missing.

I tried it on wine and could install it but when I booted it up I would only meet a welcoming screen telling about it being a demo and I was unable to proceed.

Yep, I'm impressed. Seems that it doesn't exaggerate animations as much as in some tech demos, sadly. For example, there seems to be less wobbling when I shake the spine and less of that tipping over effect when I try to build a tweety bird creature. I must say, I miss that a little bit, but this is really impressive.
I also have noticed a distinct lack of animation blending which Will showed off when he first demoed Spore, which I dearly hope is not a lost feature since it was a very impressive technical feat. I can see why the creature editor would not have such a thing presented on its end, so I remain hopeful for that one. I love the way they've fleshed out the creature design gameplay with special powers and the like. Really cool :)
Particularly interesting is that you can actually block a creature's own legs with other poorly positioned limbs, leading to slower walking. Very interesting...
Suffice it to say, I have built all manner of abominations.
A shame that Wine doesn't run it immediately, but it's great that the Wine developers will have so much time now to get it (and thus Spore itself) working.

Very fun. Definitely buying the full creator tomorrow. As a dino-geek, my first few creations have been entirely predictable...

Here is my first creation:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=dlcxvcrh9vg
You can share the characters by uploading the PNG files located in C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\My Documents\My Spore Creations\Creatures
They embed the character information in the files themselves, pretty awesome. You can place them in that directory and get any character people give you.

We just have to wait for it to be patched up. I luckily still have an XP PC purely for games.

It was originally a TV show, then the game came out just as it was getting big (and had arrived in the U.S/Europe.

I used this to install directx9c http://wine-review.blogspot.com/2008/03/directx-90c-march-2008-redistributable.html. But I just get a black screen and then wine closes.

Oh, I thought you where making a joke. The game is two years older then the show and the entire property is owned by Nintendo. The game was developed in 95 while the show premired in 97.

lies!
you just have to intuit where the ui is supposed to be. when you get to the spiraling galaxy (the main login screen) you will notice that upon mouse over -barely to the right of the center of those spiraling arms- you will hear a different sound. click that spot and it will load up the creature editor. the little blob will float there and you can make vain attempts to click where different parts are, hover over them, grab them and go all mr. potato head on the blob.
however, it likes to render "behind" images "infront." so trying to make a creature can be done, it just won't render correctly at all. for starters, the grass blades render floating in the foreground. eyes that should be on the far side of the head will appear, but the close eye won't. the inside of the mouth will show, the outside won't. so yeah, it works, and from spinning the camera around you can get a sense of what your abomination looks like, but don't hold out for awesomeness.
and don't even think about using the painting tool... that's impossible without the ui, and just guessing can get you rather lost.
i've even managed to make a baby appear in the walk-around feature. must've clicked on the egg icon. that was by randomly clicking the bottom of the screen to test emotions and actions that wouldn't look right anyway due to the improper graphics.
so yeah, it works. but it works like it's broken. ~_^
here's hoping someone smarter than i works that out.
but hey, now the WINE background people have two months to get this going, so that spore will be a "platinum" or "gold" for them. 'cause this game will be hot.
errata: thanks Lostincyberspace, i just read your sig and lost the game. didn't even click the site. and as per the rules, i have to mention it.

Anyone who has made an account needs to post a link to their shared critters on the web. I'm interested in seeing what everyone has made.

I'm finding this very addictive, and have created all manner of stupid creatures.
Checked it this morning and it said the Sporepedia now contained something like 350,000 creatures, up from 16,000 the day before. That should be enough to populate a lifetime's play of Spore, all in a couple of days.
I have to admit, I wasn't as impressed about the whole UGC aspect of Spore as Wil Wright suggested we should be, but having seen the explosion of creativity on the Youtube Spore channel (http://youtube.com/spore) i've changed my mind. There could be a lot of really cool stuff in the game, and i'm really intrigued to see how the mechanics of rating and picking content will work.

Been waiting for spore for so long now and the creator creator is a perfect teaser. So much cool technical detail for just a demo, like all the wobbling and limb position affecting speed.
Have we all agreed that we can't run the creator creator through wine? I'm fine using windows to play, i'd just rather run it on ubuntu if i could.
edit: i didn't realise this thread went to 4 pages, and so i only posted after the 1st. apologies.
