I am also having similar problem:
After upgrading my gutsy server, new kernel version (2.6.24-18, server equipment) got installed, I restarted the server, it dead at black screen after the new kernel was selected to boot in. It's strange that I can boot in to recovery mode of the same kernel or do normal booting of the old kernel (2.6.22).
