I like Black metal, some Thrash metal (80's bands), some Death and occasionally something symphonic.

In the Others. There is too much metal to have a poll on this forum (limited to 10 options).

See http://www.bnrmetal.com/ for classifications.

I voted Power Metal and Symphonic Metal. I like me some Yngwie Malmsteen, but that's not enough to justify a speed metal vote, he's in his own category.

Goth: Lake of Tears (http://www.lakeoftears.net/), I just love this band. They are from Sweden and during their career they approached many different styles, even symphonic. Their latest album is Moons and Mushrooms. Read some more at Last.fm Wiki Page (http://www.last.fm/music/Lake+of+Tears). Amorphis (http://www.last.fm/music/Amorphis) are fine too, but they are a little 'too goth' for me. I never liked that specific rough voice. But the instrumentals rock! Nightwish is fine too.

I also like the power metal band Iced Earth (http://www.last.fm/music/Iced+Earth). Entire Burnt Offerings album, plus melodies like Melancholy (Holy Martyr), I Died for You or Dark Saga.

Some other metal which I listen to include Metallica, Judas Priest, Manowar on rare occasions.

I'm mostly a classic rock fan, what can I say... Can't compare Pink Floyd or Doors with Nightwish, at least not in my heart.

And almost forgot: Sabbath for the win!

It is the Bucket Head, some of you may know him from his work in pop cultural music settings, but he plays mostly with the top NY avant-garde

Fairly eclectic, don't prefer one style to the other, general rule is the lyrics have to be neutral (awesome sound to compensate) - mildly interesting -intelligent, even if some of the music sounds good, I can't handle excessively stupid or otherwise generic lyrics, so glam/hair metal is pretty much out of the picture.

I do make an exception for Rammstein though, generally unintelligent but usually bizarre / absurd, love them.

I wouldn't say Iron Maiden offers profound lyrics, but they aren't retards either. I like them. Love Bruce Dickinson's solo stuff, listening to "Tyranny of Souls" right now.

Like Nightwish, but sometimes I find it too melodramatic / cheezy.

I tried to get into Iced Earth, but I find myself skipping them usually. I don't know what it is, but something about them just doesn't click with me. I will say, though, that I don't skip Angel's Holocaust.

I'm pretty big on NWOBHM as well as Thrash, Death and Doom.

With the exception of a couple of newer Swedish bands and newer albums by older bands most metal has been stone dead for me since Burn My Eyes came out, everything seems so insipid it makes me feel really angry and I have to go back and listen to Kill 'em All or something.

So now I listen to loads of stuff, different genres etc.

Well, I'm not a metal fan by any means but every now and then I listen bands like Nightwish (http://youtube.com/watch?v=hRc9rNDZOCE), Stam1na (http://youtube.com/watch?v=UTsGFIG2USA), Mokoma (http://youtube.com/watch?v=ds2rl-2aCaQ), Amorphis (http://youtube.com/watch?v=CleR2nYASdo), Kotiteollisuus (http://youtube.com/watch?v=xd8w6VBYDHM). Porcupine Tree is a huge favorite also. And special humppapoljento-award goes for Trollhammaren by Finntroll (http://youtube.com/watch?v=lpDo0BdC2SU).

edit. I started thinking and I'd guess that I'm just pretty much average Finn when it comes to metal. Even though all here are not metal _fans_ pretty much everybody still listen to it (because bands like Amorphis, Kotiteollisuus, Stam1na, etc. are mainstream and one cannot simply avoid hearing them).

Yes Buckethead also played with Ozzy, but he is best known with his own albums and Bill Laswell's projects. Checkout his website.
http://www.bucketheadland.com/
Dear old Buckethead is a enigma wrapped in a riddle surrounded by the paradigms of his own innate abilities. Personally I like him due to his dissonant playing style, he can play a beautiful ballad but he also can, and most of the time is all over the place in a more 12 tone chromatic expression. The more out it is the more I like it. He is considered to be in the top ten thrashers, and the top 3 of alternative.

One band I haven't seen mentioned is Megadeth, Dave Mustaine is a great player and their music is just slightly on the advanced music theoretical plains at times very thought out unusual harmonies for the style.

I ticked Death/Thrash and Other - Older, but to be honest I'm not keen on trying to classify everything the we always insist on doing. I like the music I like, and rarely consider what genre it might fit in to. Conversely, from the point of view that I might have if I was in charge of a band, I wouldn't like my band to be classified in any way, in case it in some way restricted our creative freedom.

There is a band I like from the late 80's and early 90's. They will be lesser known as they refused to sign any contracts with big labels, choosing instead to remain completely independent (not "indie" or "white label" - actually independent). Daisy Chainsaw (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daisy_Chainsaw) they called themselves. I'm not sure what genre you'd put them in. There are a few of their performances on Youtube, so judge for yourself. (Warning: Don't watch at work though as some of the more visual aspects of their performance might upset some people).

AJFA > you, and Dave had nothing to do with it

I'm rather glad for Megadeth's existence anyway; it seperated one great band into two. To be honest, I don't think either band has put out anything incredibly good since Megadeth's Youthanasia and Metallica's Load, and they'll never touch anything of RIP/PSBWB or MOP/AJFA quality again. -_-

Wait, Soundgarden is Metal? I've ALWAYS labelled them as Grunge Alternative, right there with Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Alice in Chains. All of whom I love.

That's the problem with trying to classify musical styles of artists, though. The Soundgarden that is "Jesus Christ Pose" is quite different from the Soundgarden that is "Black Hole Sun" and "Burden in my Hand".

I guess I'm more of a mainstream metal guy, really. But if I can list what others claim as metal, and similar sounding bands, then what's in my musical library includes:

Alice in Chains
Apocalyptica
Atreyu
Black Sabbath
Circle of Dust
Coal Chamber
Deftones
Disturbed
Drowning Pool
Flybanger
Godsmack
Guano Apes
Guns N Roses
Killswitch Engage
Klank
Korn
Machines of Loving Grace
Marilyn Manson
Megadeth
Metallica
Monster Magnet
Mudvayne
Nine Inch Nails
Orgy
Ozzy
Pantera
Rammstein
Sevendust
Slayer
Slipknot
Sonic Mayhem
Soundgarden
Spiderman 5000
Stabbing Westward
Static X
System of a Down
Tantric

White/Rob Zombie

I love just about every category on the poll; not too big on glam. Some "others" of which I'm particularly fond: so-called "stoner" metal (Minsk, Sleep, etc.) and that sort of catch-all when people aren't sure what else to call it, "progressive" metal (Unexpect, Sikth, Spiral Architect, Diablo Swing Orchestra, etc., etc.).

I used to listen to some Christian metal back in the day. A couple of quality bands were The Crucified (speed metal/thrash), and Vengeance Rising (maybe more like death metal?).

It is more doomdeath/gothic with some doom influences isn't it?

<after listening>
They are pretty good, but not doom metal. Plus I typically don't like female singers. I think I will sticky to Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus and the like for now. (In the Doom sense, I typically listen to Black metal or some Thrash bands)

I thought I had seen Mr Bungle mentioned although not strictly metal. Mr Bungle is a mixture of musical genre. I agree with the statements by the well known song writer and producer Quincy Jones. What he said was that as far as genre goes it has been done; now you have to mix it all together to have art. If you look at a lot of the listed groups in this thread that is what they are doing. :)

Although, by taking a peek at my amarok playlist, I got a lot of rock (AC/DC mostly), in terms of metal:

Dragonforce : Power Metal
Delain : Gothic Metal

And other things that are Gothic and Power, and a mixture of alternative here and there. I just discovered I love power metal :).

I voted Doom, Symphonic, and the two "other" options.
I'm not a die-hard metal fan, but I like artists like Nadja, Ministry, Green Jell˙ (seriously), Prong, Primus, Faith No More, Boris, and Fear Falls Burning. There's also that Ascend project (Sunn0))) side project) that I like. So basically my vote means nothing.
Also, I don't really consider Ministry metal, but they are seen as such, although I don't really care for their later albums.

Also I like some old, like some Metallica is still nice, Iron Maiden, and of cause Halloween (or how they spell :P damn I suck at band names) but not much older.

But my passion is Progressive metal, I would cound A.C.T for my absolute favorite band, after would be Pain of Salvation, Devin Townsend Band, Dream Theater, Symphony X.. and so on in that fashion.

Oh, and of cause I have to say Black Mages (Uemasu's own Final fantasy metal project :)).

In the history of metal, "Heavy Metal" was a generic term. Many of the original bands have been reclassified as "Power Metal", because the genre has expanded.

"Heavy Metal" encompasses all metal (often just shortened to "Metal"). Power Metal, Speed Metal, Thrash Metal, Death Metal, Black Metal, Doom Metal, etc are all sub-genres of Heavy Metal.

heard of Yngwie Malmsteen? He is pretty much god when it comes to speed. he's been around since the 80's, and his last album came out in 2005. Anvil - Forged in fire:

Scraping the Earth in search of the essence
Metallic rock ore where iron is present
Extraction smelters burn hot with phosphorescence

Rivulets of sweat steam hot in the mold
Splashes in magenta, yellow and gold
Glowing sparks flashing too hot to hold

Made for pounding a massive weight
Forming metal, willing fate

Power blasted streams engage the injection
The mechanism reacts with affection
Processing starts and so begins infection

Chorus:
Altered shape, affected matter
Giving form, an ominous factor
Never break it, it will never bend
The Anvil was Forged In Fire

-Verse 1-

Made for pounding a massive weight
Forming metal, a willing fate

What! No Grindcore option?

No, no Britney Spears either. This is a metal thread remember?

My response exactly. I'm huge into grind (PxDx for the win). Also I love death, but not thrash so I was a little confused. Slayer, I think, is terribly overrated but damned if Deicide isn't one of the heaviest bands ever.

The lines between Death and Thrash metal are blurry sometimes.

I'll agree, but I think you could call thrash/speed one genre and leave death as a catch-all for all its variants. That's just nitpicking though, the poll options are just a launching point for discussion.

It was hard to make, as I was limited. I didn't want to have too specific options with a catchall "other", and I didn't want to have too vague options.

I think grindcore lack the melodic notes that metal music has. And if you compared those two kind music head to head, there is some difference, but I can't tell what is it. It's just feel different..

FAAAAIL! There's no mention of Accept or Testament or Dio?!?!

Anyhow, here's my epic list:

Accept, Assassin (80's thrash from Germany, it's nice), Atrophy (another 80's thrash band and nobody has ever heard of it but it's one of the best IMO), Bruce Dickinson, Cage (newer band that plays classic heavy metal, awesome), Darkness (an 80's thrash band from Germany again), Death, Dio, Ensiferum, Exodus, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Metal Church (Heavy/Trash, USA), Overkill, Slayer, Stone (this is one of the best bands ever as well, 80's thrash, Finland), Tarot (Finnish heavy metal), Testament, Whiplash (80's thrash) and Wintersun.

If you haven't heard of the obscure ones I demand suggest you try them out, many of them are among the best IMO.

Theres nothing wrong with "The day that never comes" and the new album is gonna be kick ***. And whats the problem with them selling lots of records? That's the fans fault not theirs. They donate tons of money. They are huge supporters of the Make A Wish foundation and give the kids a chance to come hang out with them. They often have Fan days and Fan only events. Geez, theres no electronically produced sounds in their music. They all play instruments, Still lots of Distortion. All bands try different things. No single band still plays what they played when they first started. I take my hat off to them for trying something different and still keep the majority of their fan base. Theyre obviously still doing something right. I think it just goes to show how talented and versatile they are. Their new album is back to heavy riffs and solos though.

Pop music as a genre features a noticeable rhythmic element, catchy melodies and hooks, a mainstream style and conventional structure. The term can also refer to any piece of music that appears in popular record charts due to a high number of sales and/or airplay.

In contrast to styles that may require music education to fully appreciate, a defining characteristic of pop music is that anyone is able to enjoy it. Artistic concepts such as musical form and aesthetics are not a concern in the writing of pop songs, the primary objectives being audience enjoyment and commercial success.

Although pop music is usually produced with a desire to sell records and do well in the record charts, this does not imply that those aims are always achieved: pop songs can be commercial failures.

Wow.

I like Thrash/Speed, Death and Traditional Metal. Traditional Metal basically is Metal before all the sub-genres came along....basically classic metal, including NWOBHM.

Thrash/Speed:
Overkill
Testament
Slayer
Death Angel
Dark Angel
Vio-lence
Metallica (pre-1990)
Megadeth
Anthrax
Forbidden
Kreator
Destruction

Death Metal:
Napalm Death
Morbid Angel
Suffocation
Pyrexia
Deicide
Boltthrower
Carcass
Entombed

Traditional Metal:
Iron Maiden
Blitzkrieg
Judas Priest
Black Sabbath
Diamond Head
Satan
Deep Purple
Rainbow

Those are just some random favorites of each genre. Now for a couple comments on some of the posts in this thread.

Metallica are not, nor have they ever been, "Megadeth wannabe's". Firstly, the two bands sound nothing alike; and secondly, Metallica was around first.

Metallica is no longer metal, that goes without saying....but in their heyday, they were not only metal, but they were, indeed, thrash/speed metal....and they were DAMN good at it! Ride The Lightning and Master Of Puppets are some of the best thrash to come out of the genre. No matter what they do now, you can't deny them that.

Lastly...grindcore is metal. Anyone who says otherwise is....well...........wrong.

Venom. I like my metal black.

I don't get why people refer to Venom as black metal. Venom was around long before that term even came into regular usage. Black metal as a genre didn't come along until the '90s with bands like Emperor, Mayhem and Immortal. Calling Venom black metal is like when people call Neil Young grunge. Bands like Venom and Possessed influenced black metal, but that does not make them a part of it. And if they're black metal because of their satanic lyrics, then that would put Slayer in the same category, though I've never heard Slayer referred to as black metal. Venom were thrash.

Well, that's a matter of opinion...which is fine. Personally I think that in their heydays, both bands were on a par, though I always preferred Dave's voice over James. They had different sounds that were both great (my opinion). Also, in my opinion, they both suck now, so the point is moot. :P

I did, however, see you mention a couple times in this thread that Metallica weren't metal. Maybe they aren't now...but they most certainly were in the 80's.

I think he's referring to the album Black Metal, not necessarily saying they're black metal. Also, Venom aren't really thrash, they're speed metal. Yes there is a difference.

Oh, and speaking of which Black Metal and Welcome to Hell are totally awesome albums. If you listen to Metal and don't like those albums, there must be something wrong with you.

Lastly...grindcore is metal. Anyone who says otherwise is....well...........wrong.

You're right, but some "grind" has a lot of Death Metal elements, and some Death Metal takes a lot after grindcore so that's a pretty iffy case. Pure grindcore, though, of course is not metal.

Guess you've never read the liner notes for Hit the Lights :) Nor listened to Killing Is My Business, and Business is good? Ever heard No Life to Leather? Take a listen to Mechanix then The Four Horse Men. Dave Mustaine was in Metallica, which is why Megadeth and Metallica sound so much alike for their first 4 or 5 albums.

Mustaine also wrote Ride the Lightning, and The Call of Ktulu, from Ride the Lightning. He also had a large influence on some Master of Puppets songs. Depending on he you talk to, he may have, or have not wrote Leper Messiah.

I'm not saying Metallica are Megadeth wannabe's, but considering they started from the same band, it's no wonder they are so similar to sound and style. They were much more alike, then not.

Saying they sound nothing alike is like saying Metallica's new bass player Roberto Trujillo is killer, but the dude from Infectious Grooves sucks. Punk it Up <- Thanks a pretty good song, think I'll listen to it now.

"Play them fast": Not all metal is fast.

It's basically sacrilege. And siding with the devil. haha. I still like all kinds of metal yet, it seems that this newest generation of kids like The girliest boys, and the popsy bands.

I remember when Nirvana got the nevermind album, and all you could hear in the radio was Grunge, Seattle new Sound, Power metal and so forth.

Nowadays its all about who plays the fastest and who is better and all that. The simplicity of older times is lost.

I don't know where you got that. Some genres are very slow. Epic Doom Metal for example.

Distorted vocals are often used (especially in non-metal bands it seems), although I think if the vocals are contrasting (Cradle and Draconian for example) it has a nice effect.

.....is emo considered metal in the US? (PLEASE.... somebody tell me I am smoking crack..)

Reign in Blood.

I meant the actual Song. You know.. the part just before the solo that goes

"Raining bloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
From a lacerated sky
Bleeding its horror
Creating my structure
Now I shall reign in blood!"

then both King and Hanneman go crazy with the guitars (much more live)

I still think sometimes the gutural screams are overused. And sometimes it feels.... weird.

Take Behemoth for example. I seriously do not understand a single word that guy utters or burps or whatever. to me he is just going
grunt grunt grunt grunt

Then there is Deicide, that sounds like it was brought directly from the 8th pile of the hell.

Opeth for instance, has such a moderated use of the Growl, that it actually enhances the song.

Cradle of filth is something I still Can't get to like. Sure the musicmanship is topnotch but I still can't like the music they make but they are very good

I think they are the victim of "copy cat". Something is overused to the point it is abandoned by the original users. Many Black Metal bands don't use corpse paint because it was overused by others for example. Black Metal was a reaction to the styles of Death Metal being overused and diluted.

Cradle of filth is something I still Can't get to like. Sure the musicmanship is topnotch but I still can't like the music they make but they are very good

I love them (as their albums progress, I like fewer of the songs though).

Her Ghost in the Fog is a great song.

Why not? Live paired with the Ultra big screen is just great!

Just try sitting in a concert while they play the dark eternal night and watching the screen with the comic/cartoon/movie.

is great!

And yeah Music is Extremely complicated... Symphony X's Guitarist Michael Romeo is some kind of genius

Because I don't really like music that's the technical for the sake of being technical, and Dream Theater ventures into that territory a lot. Out of those super-technical bands I mentioned before, the only one of those I really listen to is Protest the Hero, and sometimes Spastik Ink, because they're not supposed to be taken seriously anyway. I'm more concerned with how good it sounds, and sometimes I think "Ok, I get it, you know your way around your instrument, I don't care".

You're free to like it though, of course.

But Protest the hero is more like A Heavy Speed prog metal hybrid thingy. Sure the guys have some bright moments of complete odd signature, but they are more heavy than prog... I wouldnt consider them technical but thats my Opinion and it surely is wrong : )

That also means the dragonForce falls where? ultra Hip? Ultra commercial? ultra technical? Or like one of my friends like to say "Ultra pointless and Ultra Silly for a real band of grown men! they sound like the power rangers!"

Well they are pretty technical, but the other bands I posted are a lot more technical. I just have a bias towards them because they're from my home town and Arif (the bassist) went to my highschool.

Dragonforce are fun, but I don't listen to them too much anymore. They are show offs, yes, but really the problem is that they're so repetitive. I know they're really cheesy, I think even the band members would admit that.

That is impossible. Metal is a subset of music and music can't contain more sets than it does.

Yes, I'm perfectly aware of everything you've stated above, except for the last part....since it's not true. Megadeth and Metallica sound nothing alike, aside from the fact that they both play the same style of music. They don't sound any more alike than Slayer and Anthrax do....or Testament and Overkill....or Dark Angel and Exodus. Mustaine originally being in Metallica does not immediately mean that Metallica and Megadeth sound alike. Megadeth's early stuff (especially Killing Is My Business...) is bordering on jazz fusion. Gar Samuelson was a trained jazz drummer and played in various jazz bands before and after Megadeth. Lars is a straightforward rock/metal drummer...nothing special, just good solid timekeeping. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, just that the two drummers had very different styles, which plays a big role in the sound of the bands as a whole. Also Dave Mustaine was a way better singer than Hetfield. Lyrical content of both bands was completely different in the beginning as well. Mustaine didn't really start with the political lyrics until So Far, So Good...So What. Their first two albums his lyrics were based more in the occult and supernatural themes, which Metallica never really delved into, save for a few scattered songs here and there.

Mustaine also wrote Ride the Lightning, and The Call of Ktulu, from Ride the Lightning. He also had a large influence on some Master of Puppets songs. Depending on he you talk to, he may have, or have not wrote Leper Messiah.Exactly. "depending on who you talk to". I think both Mustaine and the guys in Metallica are a bunch of whiny bitches, personally. I stay out of the drama and just listen to the music, so I don't care who wrote what or who stole what, because other than the obvious exception of Mechanix/Four Horsemen, we don't know who wrote what. I do know this, though: IF Mustaine had anything to do with songs that wound up on Master Of Puppets, that means he had to have written those songs like 2-3 years before that album was released. Who knows what kind of changes were made to those songs by the time they actually got recorded? Changes made my Metallica (with Hammett). Maybe Mustaine had some rough ideas for songs (random riffs, etc) but they didn't become Metallica songs until long after Dave was gone...which means Dave didn't write those songs. I'm not claiming to know that as the case. I'm just saying it's a very good possibility. If Dave wrote Leper Messiah while still in the band, then how come it never made it onto Kill 'Em All or Ride The Lightning. Maybe it sucked and Metallica completely rewrote it, keeping nothing but the title, which was taken from a David Bowie song anyway.

Saying they sound nothing alike is like saying Metallica's new bass player Roberto Trujillo is killer, but the dude from Infectious Grooves sucks.No. It's nothing like that at all. However, by your theory, I guess you're saying that Metallica now sounds like Infectious Grooves because Robert Trujillo is in the band.

A few issues:

If you were deadlifting any meaningful weights, it would have required your fullest attention to avoid injury, and music of any sort would be a distraction.
If you fell asleep during said workout, I recommend seeing a doctor for possible hormonal issue.
If you don't like Pantara (I don't), don't listen to them
If you don't like Metal (I do), don't listen to it, and don't post on this thread (which is for metal fans)

Venom aren't really thrash, they're speed metal. Yes there is a difference.

Actually, if you want to really strip it down.....Venom's punk.....just with hair. :)

Oh, and speaking of which Black Metal and Welcome to Hell are totally awesome albums. If you listen to Metal and don't like those albums, there must be something wrong with you. While I'm not denying the idea of many things being wrong with me, I don't think it has anything to do with me not liking Venom. I think it's just.....well, a difference of musical taste. I don't hate them, I just get bored with them after a while. All their songs sound the same to me.

Pure grindcore, though, of course is not metal. What is "pure" grindcore?

Ah, sorry I am talking about his work with Dream Theater, and Liquid Tension Experiment. My favourite Dream Theater song is "Home", like the riffs and the East Indian mimicry, awesome. Also, where are the Opeth fans?

It is very diverse, but here are some of my favourites from various genres:

Candlemass: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWNS_cBNpeY ("Epic Doom Metal", there are various Doom Metal bands, Candlemass and Draconian are too good examples of contrasting styles.)
Draconian http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-H-Ngq9-Mo

Megadeth: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65JpQRUf8XE (This is Thrash Metal. Typically fast and dealing with social issues)
Megadeth: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YczYC2yHTM

Iron Maiden: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2za92DQOCw (NWBHM)

If you want more recommendations, PM me and I will find a bigger selection of styles for you.

Well that depends if you want to just start into the heavy stuff or go light.

For heavy stuff I Suggest
Heavy Metal And Thrash Metal

For lighter stuff I suggest
Nu-Metal(please don't be like most kids if you choose nu-metal)
Most kids who enjoy only nu-metal think they know everything about metal...

Then there is also alt metal which is great.

Some bands to look at-
Black Label Society(Heavy Metal)
Metallica(back in the 80's they were hard thrash metal)
Korn(great Nu-Metal)

Look into those bands they are basically the best of each I can think of.
Others will probably suggest other things which you might like better.

And for the record, I wasn't insulted or anything. :)
