scp issue on hardy

Greetings:

In a cron job, I do a daily file backup from my TheLocalHost server to a remote server using the scp command. The remote server was upgraded to hardy 8.04 and TheLocalHost server is running 7.04. After the upgrade the file copy stopped working. It turns out that I can still scp from the remote server to the local server. Here is some debug info I am hoping that might help someone on this forum help me troubleshoot a little further


When I run scp -v from the remote server to the local server it works:

I do notice in the version that works, it looks like the /etc/environment is being utilized which adds the path. I am not sure how to make this happen in the TheLocalHost version.

Might anyone on this forum have some suggestion on what I should try next to fix this? Should I try to load a different version of scp on the remote or TheLocalHost server?

As a temporary workaround suggestion I received from a colleague, I have to use scp on the remote machine to pull the file from TheLocalHost server.

A very silly question but did you install the ssh meta package on the 8.04.1 machine. By default (at least in some server installs) the sshd server daemon is not installed.

Thanks for the suggestion. I did in fact need to install the ssh package on the 8.04 machine with 'sudo apt-get install ssh' (I found this strange in that I ssh into the remote server all the time from work and assumed that the sshd needed to be running to do this) but I still get the same error message from TheLocalServer.

Is there something there that would cause scp not to be found in the path? I'm not sure what to try next. Do you have another suggestion?

Hello:

I'm just checking to see if any bash or ssh experts have had a chance to look at this issue? I'm tring to hold of on remotely pulling the files from the remote server instead of pushing them from TheLocalHost where they are created.

My issue was resolved thanks to some help from another related thread I posted: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=5439374#post5439374

basically, I needed to remove from /etc/environment these 2 lines because they were overwritting the real path:

PATH="$PATH:$MAVEN_HOME/bin"
PATH="$JAVA_HOME/bin:$PATH"
