Just out of curiosity, which language do you think is best to learn first?
My first language was Java (as a first year undergrad in college) and it was the worst thing that ever happened to me. Moving over to a real language (C/C++) was a nightmare getting used to all the things that aren't taken care of for you in Java. And in any case, I've found that Matlab is more useful for the things that I do.
