Many times I have bought a new piece of hardware, I bring it home plug it in or install it, and it has no support in Ubuntu. I know that is my fault, but we should make it easier to know if a piece of hardware is supported or not. Somebody should start a community based site for hardware compatibility. Have users submit pieces of hardware that they own and comment on what works and what doesn't. Have categories on the site to make it easy to find your equipment, such as: Webcams, Microphones, Wi-Fi cards, etc. I know somebody out there has the experience and knowledge to make this happen. Good Luck!

There is already a number of these around. Two that come to mind

Also Google is very valuable. I always do a search through Google before buying a new piece of hardware to make sure it will work with Ubuntu. The last 2 pieces of hardware I've bought were said to work with Ubuntu and they did. Required little to no configuration at all.
Wireless card and printer.
