accidental encryption

I am checking a folder full of php file for a specific tag,
<?php wp_footer(); ?>So I thought I would be able to search the entire set of files by going
cat <?php wp_footer(); ?> *.* this causes a long roll of alternate char set stuff.

Any old UNIX users who remember VT220s? This is one of those weird alt char sets that I am not positive will print here. What was the adjustment??? ^O??
