For a duel boot... how would I go about installing Ubuntu on a portable hard drive? Is it possible?

For my laptop I want to be able to duel boot windows XP and Ubuntu.

Also you will have to install the grub carefully as if you install in proper the when the external drive is not connected then the laptop will not boot as you will receive grub error.
