So I decided to go ahead and try the Kubuntu 8.04 KDE4 cd. After trying to customize it enough to be usable I realized that it just isn't there yet. Like you can't even rearrange the panel. I'm looking forward to the final release. :)

Upgrade to 4.1beta1 from the repository...

...and see what you think. I just showed my friend (who has been holding off til stable), and he found it to be good enough to finally install. :guitar:

Panel configuration (although not sure about side panels) is now there, as well as many many MANY fixes. They even have an option in the Sessions setting dialog to run Compiz instead of KWin, without having to struggle to get it working.

I'd say only a few relatively minor issues (mostly having to do with SuperKaramba>Plasma, and the like) to resolve and I'd think they are about ready for stable.

I disagree with this assessment of 4.1 beta. My personal complaint is with the loss of keyboard shortcuts. The age old practice of invoking the Kmenu with Alt-F1 is gone. As important, the ability to set keyboard shortcuts for applications is broken.

These problems may actually be more specific to Kubuntu's KDE 4.1 beta, since I understand that other distros haven't got the problems. But either way, I don't believe that Kubuntu KDE 4.1 is ready for prime time yet.

I do understand from a the developers IRC that these things should be fixed soon.

This was the biggest reason for me sticking with Gnome for now. And the KDE 4 beta takes up too much resources.
