stuck halfway in between

i tried to update to 8.04 yesterday... very dissappointed
my system froze while updating and now im stuck with a broken 7.10 that has update packages from 8.04 and nothing can run.
there isnt anything majorly important on my system, so file recovery isnt necessary
would i be able to restore gutsy with my alternate cd of gutsy?

Were you able to boot back into Ubuntu?

i can boot into it fine, login screen still works but once im at my desktop nothing else will work
no terminal, no nautilus, the panels on the top and bottom of my desktop wont even respond
