Hardware drivers fail to load after upgrading from 6.06 to 8.04

I recently upgraded my parents computer from 6.06 to 8.04, when it boots up the BIOS recognizes the keyboard and mouse, but when I boot up, it says "Hardware drivers failed" and does not recognize any keyboard or mouse. I am using PS/2 keyboard and mouse
