I'm trying to install Ubuntu on a couple of older machines. Version 6.x boots fine. I get buffer i/o error on device sr0, ERRORFS errors as well as other errors during boot when I'm using version 7.x or 8.x. Version 6.x works just fine. When the machine first boots it doesn't even display the boot menu. I just have the option to put in boot parameters and hit Enter. The discs work fine on my more modern main machine. This tells me that a) the discs are good, b) the machines are viable and c) the newer versions don't like the older hardware.

Is there a problem with accessing the IDE controller with these newer versions that requires that I enter a startup parameter?
