Gmail Notifier and Pidgin do not appear to have a way of setting them so they run automatically at startup.

Is there any way to do this manually?

hi, under system, preferences, session you can specify what programs you want to run at startup.

hey.

it doesn't say "session" under System > Preferences >
Just startup applications which I've tried but don't know how to add Gmail Notifier

true, in earlier versions of Ubuntu it was called Sessions. I dont remember if it was in Jaunty or Karmic they changed it to Statup Applications but its the same thing :)

I believe this is what you are looking for:

Preferences>Startup Applications

iirc the command you would put in would be 'pidgin'.

rest you want to add is up to you.
