Websites blocked after upgrade

After upgrading I ask myself "was it a good idea?" Everything work right up until the upgrade. But afterwards I can't access gmail (my main email server) and it seems that some other important sites (for me) are not coming up in the browser.

Ubuntu hardy 8.04, Firefox 3 (I tried bracktracking to FF2 no change), DSL router connection.

The internet works, I am writing to this forum via the above details. I've tried alternative gmail addresses and ip numbers instead of www.gmail.com

Something is definitely wrong here; it seems like this is about the tenth thread I've read today about this issue, one which, thankfully, has not affected me.
