Thinkpad R40 doesn't work with 8.04, did with 7.10?

I tried upgrading from 7.10 and and also formating and installing 8.04 and am left with the same non-functioning operating system. The major symptoms are that sound (volume control) does not function and the wireless network connection is not recognized. How can that be? It all worked in version 7.10. What can I do to make it work?
