I am having problems installing Ubuntu on my Dell Inspiron 500m... I'd like to make it the only OS, but after burning my iso and rebooting (using the utility to reboot within the Ubuntu install utility within-if you are not able to boot with cd).

When doing this I get an option to boot windows or ubuntu. When I hit ubuntu I get a flash of data- something memory related, then I get a blinking cursor, which never changes. can't type, hitting return changes nothing.

Next I tried to install Ubuntu as a dual boot from windows, but when it completed and restarted itself it went to the same place as above.

What am I doing wrong?

Could be a bad burn. Try burning the ISO at a lower speed. Also, make sure that you select an option to burn as an image in your CD burning software.

Hi there,

Maybe you should download the alternate install .iso.

For a great guide to help you through, click on this link

If you need basic info on Ubuntu/Linux, just click "Look here" in my signature below.

Good luck, and welcome to Ubuntu :)
