I have spent the last 4 hours trying to fix this upgrade from Gutsy to Hardy. The upgrade went fine, but upon reboot when the login screen loaded it went away, then loaded again about 2 seconds later only to go away, etc. It keeps flashing repeatedly. I've searched all over the forums and google and tried the following:

1. Checked disk space to ensure I have plenty and I do

2. Taken ownership of everything in /home

3. Installed NVIDIA restricted drivers and tried using them

4. Reconfigured xserver I don't know how many times

Whenever I do something and then then restart gdm my cursor will change to an X and then a screen pops up saying I'm in low-graphics mode. It will let me configure stuff but it doesn't ever work (fails all tests) and after I hit OK it resumes the flashing of the login screen.

Has anyone had this problem and fixed it without reinstalling b/c I really don't have the time, I already sat through a download and 4+ hours of troubleshooting today.

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried booting into safe mode or using a different kernel?

Yeah I tried about 4 different kernels and lots of other things I found in the forum with no luck. After about 4 days of not succeeding I gave up and reinstalled. Everything from the fresh install is going fine.
