[SOLVED] new install advice

I have a nearly full "C" drive which is my mail XP operating sys. I have a second "D" hard drive with lots of space. Can I use D as my ubuntu install drive to make partitions on? Is there extra steps involved? I am not real computer literate. Please understand that.
