I ran kde4.0 for a little while, if I enable tranceparancy, the system performance slows considerably. I thought this would be fixed later.

The same problem exists in 4.1. Now I'm thinking, Is there some way to improve the transparency performance? Compiz fusion runs fine on 3.5, so shouldnt kde4.x run fine too?

Im running an athlon 3800 with a geforce6800 (nvidia driver), so my computer is not new, but its not a slouch either. I also know there were some tweak guides when 4.0 launched, do they still apply to 4.1, and if so, where can I find them?

KWin has slower effects than Compiz. Hopefully this is something the KDE team is working on for the next KDE4 point release.

I can run Compiz very quickly on my 8 MB integrated i915 video chipset at work, but I also see slowdown with KWin, although it's still usable. I disable transparency. At home I have an Nvidia 7950 GT and it's still slower in KWin than Compiz is on the i915!

You can run Compiz in KDE 4. Just load up fusion-icon and set compiz to your window manager exactly like you do in KDE 3.5.
