So, yesterday I got an update notification that upgrades the kernel to 2.6.24.18, but I have a custom kernel. If I make the upgrade, will something get wrong with my kernel?

I prefer to stay with your custom kernel if you satisfied with it. sometimes updating with new kernels disable some settings.
I myself stayed with .17 kernel.

But how can I disable the kernel updates without disabling all other security and normal upgrades (the notification icon freaks me out)

when the update manager window pop-up , read all the updates and uncheck the kernel update. this will allow all other updates to be downloaded and installed .

When I do that, all other updates are installed and the kernel upgrades are still here, so the notification icon pops up again at next login.
