My microphone is plugged in but isn't being detected. I have used ubuntu before and it worked then but isn't working now. My other hardware is being detected like usual. It's plugged into the front socket on the front of my laptop for a microphone to go in so which sound option should work for it (i might have missed it or something)?

I don't know what else to say apart from i'm running ubuntu 8.04 which i installed through wubi using windows and i done the same thing last time and the microphone was working then.

Open the volume mixer applet, goto File->Change device and select any capture device. Unmute them if necessary. Do this for all capture devices.

Try go double-click the sound icon in your panel and pick Edit=>Preferences
Then add "mic select" and a new tab will show up, called "options".

In this Options tab, pick mic 2.

Does it work now?

When i got this far, it only had the master option which i could tick or untick then a close option.

No, it just has a list which is empty apart from an option called "master" which is ticket and then a close button at the bottom.

It cost about 3.70 from Asda. It says Trust on it but thats all it says so i don't know the make or model. It works on windows without problem though so it's not broken.
