I have actually shifted my OS from Windows to Ubuntu Hardy Heron just yesterday. I need to install an important software thus I downloaded its .deb package. Actually, I have no Internet connection at home that's why I just saved the package on a flash drive.

I have read posts on how to install anything, but Synaptic Package Manager uses the Internet so I do not know what to do next. I also have read posts that states the installation in text form like:

sudo blabla...
but i also do not know where to start.

I need help!
How can I install anything without using the Internet nor a CD?
Where can I find this 'command-prompt'-like files?
I need details please. Thanks a lot!

1) What do you want to install?

2) Where did you download it from?

3) There may be dependencies that need to be installed first. If you downloaded it from Ubuntu's repositories, then you should check the dependencies (http://packages.ubuntu.com/).

I have been through that site before I joined the forum. But still I can't find what I am looking for.

Where can I find this 'command-prompt'-like files in Ubuntu where I can do the sudo...?

Correct me if I'm wrong - you want the Terminal (Like windows "Command Prompt")? By default, go to the top left area of the screen:

Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal

But if you have the .deb file, all you should need to do is double-click it like a windows .exe file and it will install.

If you downloaded package and all dependencies then do it like AndyCee said.If you are without internet nonetdebs (http://nonetdebs.unixpod.com/) is the way to get packages in the future.
