I am running Ubuntu8.04 in a HP TX1000 laptop. Strangely I am not able to use suspend while hibernate works perfectly. What could be likely areas to be tweaked?

Check whether this is relevant for you: http://www.ozymo.com/~chuck/blog/2008/05/25/hardy-and-fglrx-suspend-issues-resolved/

Which GPU (graphics card) do you have?

Whats the difference between Hibernate and Suspend. What is the "sleep" key on the keyboard for hibernate or suspend? When I the sleep key, ubuntu goes to sleep but never wakes up :(

Sleep/Suspend makes your PC go to a low power state and wake up instantly. HIbernate dumps the RAM to the disk and turns power off completely..
