First foray into Linux / Ubuntu, partitioned drive & did an alternate install, all went well for a couple of days. Accessed a lot of files in "My Docs" in Windows XP partition, created shortcuts (launchers?) for them on Ubuntu desktop. Suddenly, booting up into Ubuntu, desktop shortcuts all "crossed out"; launchers on the task bar & wallpaper disappeared.

Is this a hardware compatibility problem? Must we absolutely reinstall? Don't want to give up now, excited about learning about an alternative to Windows.

Sounds like the Windows partition has been unmounted. Did you shut down Windows properly the last time you used it? Linux refuses to load NTFS partitions if they're "dirty" in case it damages them.

There was an icon in the home folder called "18.8 Gig Media" - this pointed to the Windows partition. We found "My Documents" in here, & created a bookmark, & then several shortcuts on the desktop in Ubuntu to the document folders in Windows. But now can't even find the "18.8 Gig Media" icon anymore... not sure what Nautilus is, sorry...!

Hey! Exciting! It's quite possible Windows didn't shut down properly, but several reboots later, the shortcuts / launchers are still "crossed out"; if the prob is Windows being unmounted, what's the solution? Simple? & what explains the disappeared wallpaper on the Ubuntu desktop?

Thanks for the help.
