If you know how to build a computer or know somebody who can build one for you, you could theoretically have a wonderful Linux PC for $223.92. You can find the wishlist (http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=9695428) here. I'm thinking of building one later in the year just to mess around with.
Specs:
2.2 GHz Processor
512MB RAM
WiFi (supported out of the box)
DVD-ROM drive
80GB HD

How about a monitor, keyboard and mouse? I know you could a mouse and keyboard for 20 bucks or so, then a monitor for around 100.

I've still got old CRTs, keyboards, and mice in the garage, so I didn't really think about adding those.

I built mine for 250 but got a better deal on all my parts. I got a grafic card and a 350 gb hdd with a 2.2 cpu and 512mb mem, 1 multi dvd burner with lightscribe. The box i bought at a fair for 12 dollars with 5 fans and a decent atx. there is no wifi though but i dont need it since i set this baby up as a server. I will need more storage soon. I dont know why it even has a grafic card since its a server. I guess I like 2 screens?
going to build a nice laptop this summer with an acer box. should be a more fun project as it will equal a 2000 $ laptop while only paying 1100$ for all the parts - I did all the math and got the parts in my closet waiting for me and some free time.
good luck with your project.

It needs 1 GB of ram and a decent video card. This can only run openarena and other low-end games:(

I would go for an intel setup, b/c of the open source drivers for the video card... I'm gonna see what I can whip up

EDIT:

So, I found this mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128076R
And this CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116052

That's a 2.0GHz Dual Core CPU, and the motherboard has onboard intel graphics, which should work with the OSS drivers.
I kept everything else exactly the same as in your wishlist, and got a final price of $245.92

EDIT2:

Or, go for a slightly nicer mobo here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813121341 for an extra $16 (Intel branded, with a G31 chipset)

I would feel a little uneasy getting an Open Box motherboard, but that's just me.
And to all the people who want a graphics card: This is a simple "As cheap as I can get it" build, with no need for one.

I got an Emachine at Circuit City last week for $299

2.something AMD
1GB ram
160 hd
Nvidea sound, video, nic

runs 7.10 just fine, well, except firehol still doesn't work.
