I am new to Linux, although I have extensive (20+ years) experience in UNIX as sysadm and software developer on a number of platforms including Sun, IBM, HP, and others.
I have a third-party producing an Ubuntu 7.10 system for me to develop business applications as a side business.
I am used to Hummingbird Exceed's CDE desktop environment and assume that KDE is similar.
I have also read, ad nauseum, hundreds of posts comparing Gnome to KDE and Ubuntu to Kubuntu, but my basic question has not been answered.
Is there any significant difference between using Ubuntu with KDE vs. Kubuntu in terms of performance or features?
Again, this would compare recent versions of the software on new hardware for the purpose of software development.

Thank you for considering this issue one more time.

Kubuntu IS Ubuntu with kde. no difference. Ubuntu can be easily turned into kubuntu simply by installing kubuntu-desktop, and kubuntu can be turned into ubuntu by installing ubuntu-desktop.

They are the same thing just with a different desktop environment.
Ubuntu - Gnome
Kubuntu - KDE
Xubuntu - XFCE
