Error Installing the Base System

Hi I'm trying to install Xubuntu 8.04 on my old vaio using the alternate install cd.

The installer stops at installing the base system and gives me the following error:
"Debootstrap warning

Warning: Failure trying to run: chroot /target dpkg --force-depends --install var/cache/apt/archives/dpkg_1.14.16.6ubuntu3_i386.deb"

Is this a common issue?

I'm getting a similar problem with the ubuntu 8.04 alternate install cd too, now. my laptop is kind of in a sad state now, does anyone know a fix? :(

I have the same install issue as well. Does anybody know how to fix it.
