I noticed that Ekiga wouldn't start without crashing and a quick reinstall from Synaptic resolved the issue.

I think it runs a little better, actually.

Didn't reboot fully until after several hard resets. My tasklist in the panel doesn't seem to be working. I use pidgin and it is simply gone when I close the buddy list (yes I checked with ps ax | grep pidgin) - kopete is still running but not in the tasklist panel either. I also had to re-add the weather applet to the panel.

My wireless seems to be flaky again. The initial upgrade to hardy seemed to have corrected this. The wireless works only 1 in maybe 5 or 6 reboots.

edit: I had to add my notification area to teh panel again and I removed and reinstalled pidgin and it seems to be working now. I'm afraid to reboot though.

After I installed kernel -18 and restarted the machine, I got the blue screen with initrmfs error. For me, only the default -16 kernel works. Mine is an Intel Core2Duo system with Vista pre-installed. I heard somewhere that this error had been corrected in -18. I simply comment out the -18 related entries in the grub menu and use the (good) old -16 kernel. Keeping fingers crossed :(

Do I need to provide more info about my machine?

Update via update-manager went smoothly; virtualbox is dead in the water. I need the kernel module for 18; which isn't in the repo yet. Argh!

You can use Synaptic Manager. Be careful with -18...a lot of us had problems with it. I kept having strange issues with headers in -18.

Here is what worked for me:

1. Clean out the package cache and history in Synaptic by going to "Synaptic->Settings->Preferences->Files". Hopefully this will make sure you avoid any issues.

2. Go down the list and mark the following packages for installation:
linux-image-2.6.22-18-generic
linux-headers-2.6.22-18-generic
linux-restricted-modules-2.6.22-18-generic
linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22-18-generic

If you encounter any problems go back and try removing the installed packages.

Unfortunately, I can not even try to update on my desktop - it is my work computer. IOW - I NEED it to work. Good thing is that I do not live too far from the office and will be able to try it out during the weekend.
With all the help here, I am sure I will be able to either get through this flawlessly or with just a little work.

If you don't have startup manager in system preferences install it from synaptic it allows you to pick the booting kernel and other adjustments. Startup Manager can be installed from the terminal as well. I upgraded to Kernel 19 today I suspect it was from proposed I didn't look, only had to do 2 restarts to get it running correctly.

Have you tried the roaming option in the wired and wireless section of Network Manager that usually works for me to get every thing recognized to switch back to manual.

Try the steps I described in post #24. My 18 kernel works perfectly now and I think it's a little faster. Maybe even just do step #1 and see what happens in your newer kernels.

However, 2.6.24-19 screwed up my nvidia card. I get errors saying the kernel module cannot be loaded and X starts the configuration tool. Looking around I see that after the install (I DID upgrade linux-restricted-drivers etc.) there's no /lib/modules/2.6.24-18-generic/volatile/nvidia.ko on my system. That file apparently somehow gets created during the install; it's not shipped that way in any package.

Please select the correct restricted-modules package for your kernel and everything will be work fine after a reboot. (see link)

OK, I tried this:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24-19-genericand now I can see the nvidia.ko files again:

However, after I rebooted that .ko was gone again!! I've tried this 3 times and the behavior is exactly the same each time. What could be removing those .ko files on reboot?!?!

If I bring down the failsafe X server, then run the dpkg-reconfigure, then run /etc/init.d/gdm restart to bring back up X, all is fine and dandy... until I reboot! Then I have to do it all over again. That's pretty annoying....

OK I installed my cloned drive (I use it for updates - have 8.04 on it and 7.10 on the live drive) and updated to .18

It fixed a problem I had with the panel being jacked up. I also can not change backgrounds. Virtualbox does not work (tells you to /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup, but that gives an error). I absolutely need Virtualbox for work..all of the computers use PCAnywhere for remote access.

Firefox seems very sluggish, like...have you ever opened a web page and scrolled in IE without the video driver being installed in Windows?..like that. In fact any graphics seem sluggish a bit. I have the restricted drivers installed for my ATI 1150.

Stunningly, my wireless did not break with the kernel update. Thats a new good thing...I always had to reinstall the wireless driver with a kernel update. I tried to get the .19 update with the update manager, but it said my computer was up to date.

For now I will stick with 7.10 on this machine and kernel .16 on the desktop (at work).

Maybe it's because I picked the "keep the local version currently installed" for menu.lst after the upgrade. :confused: Therefore it didn't add menu.lst entries for 2.6.24.18?? But why would the installer default to that option?

I manually edited menu.lst to include an entry for 2.6.24-17 and it booted fine ... so I'll reinstall -18 and do the same manual config to the file.

I tried that after I posted. Though I did not remove the previous installation of VB. During the install I watched terminal output. I noticed and did an 'upgrade'. Anyhow, when I started VB, it lost the XP install ("not accessible") and the W2k3 install wouldn't recognize any keystrokes ( couldn't login).

Can I get rid of the old versions?

-19 is working with minor tweaks. I've had one direct change (sound defaults changed -- fixed by updating the volume preference) one possibly (but not clearly) related issue (OpenOffice updates breaking) and one app-specific issue (virtualBox kernel module). The OpenOffice issue I fixed by removing all OO binaries and libraries through synaptic and reinstalling via the OpenOffice Suite selection. Would running a fsck at bootup prior to performing a kernel update smooth the whole process?

You mention rhythmbox not working -- do you have any sound working at all? What happens when you go to System > Preferences > Sound and click on the Test button for Sound Events? The Kernel Update changes my sound preferences but I changed my default device in the volumen preference panel, by right-clicking the volume tray, and choosing preferences.

19 completely borked sound to the point that I couldnt even open volume control on an intel cellron hp 7920. It had said "no gstreamer plugins or devices found" so I had to drop back to the 18 kernel..just an fyi...

Identical problem with my machine: -17 and -18 kernels bork Suspend by it works with -16.

Kernel -16 was the only kernel with hibernation sort of working. Kernels -17 and -18 failed to wake up after hibernation. However, kernel -19 wakes up with no sound after hibernation (the same problem with -16.) If I reboot -19 (and -16), sound will work but I cannot get the microphone work.

playing java games on the network. The system is almost unstable.

I have sound problem on my Toshiba laptop after the update to 19. In fact at my first Hardy installation I had been able to hear sound only with a headphone. Then I had corrected that problem. But now sound has gone completely after updating to 19. What do I miss if I use kernel 18 or 16?

All sorts of issues on multiple machines. Very unhappy. They need to better scrutinize these updates for side affects. It should never be their philosophy to leave people high and dry knowing their updates will do this. This is an OS for the human beings not for the geeky zealots.
