Kernel Upgrade - Upgrade manager, Synaptic, Sources no longer open

Did the upgrade of kernel yesterday, to 18, lost Upgrade Manager, Synaptic and Sources under Admin (they're there, they just don't do anything), went back to 17, no better, any thoughts?

I'm not savvy, talk slowly (or at least post easy to follow visual cues)
