View Full Version : [ubuntu] 8.04 x64 Active Directory member desktop problems

June 4th, 2008, 05:15 PM
I upgraded my Ubuntu Desktop, an HP xw4400 with 4GB RAM, to Ubutnu 8.04. After completing the upgrade, I joined the machine to our office's Active Directory (following and modifying as appropriate these instructions: http://blog.scottlowe.org/2007/01/15/linux-ad-integration-version-4/ ).

I can successfully log onto my computer using my Active Directory account. My home directory, /home/staff/username, resides on the local hard disk.

Somewhat randomly my desktop theme is replaced by unstyled widgets. Attempts to access System->Preferences->Appearance fail. It sounds like I'm suffering from bug 138277, to which I've attached comments:

Launching Pidgin from the shortcut I placed on the top GNOME bar causes my session to revert this morning. After rebooting, Pidgin launched just fine, and I was happily using my properly themed desktop when -- without any action on my part -- the session blew up again and my desktop reverted back to unstyled widgets.

I can -- and probably will -- perform a fresh installation of 8.04, in the (probably futile) hope that something really weird happened in the upgrade. But if anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears.
