Okay, this problem (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=817783) seems to be the same as I've just experienced. BOth the top and bottom panels had dissappeared. :( I uninstalled evolution using synaptic and all was well. I prefer Thunderbird as my email client. However, this morning when I booted up again, there were no panels and couldn't get a terminal window open.

Is there some way to uninstall evolution without also uninstalling any pacakages/dependancies for other programs like the desktop/panels. Please keep in mind that I'm a relative newbie to this and in sheer frustration reinstalled from scratch. I was using 8.04, but have reverted back to 7.10 for now :)

Thanks in advance
