I read about it here:

http://tombuntu.com/index.php/2008/06/03/canonical-announces-the-ubuntu-netbook-remix/

Can that launcher be downloaded?

Will canonical offer a version to download without the proprietary apps?

Wow, this "Netbook" thing is really interesting. Hopefully Canonical will be succeeded with this project as well :-)

More info and a video here; http://www.canonical.com/netbooks

Ubuntu Netbook Remix here; https://launchpad.net/netbook-remix

Looks good, hope the upcoming Del mini-Inspiron will have Ubuntu - then I would go for it.

Anyone else try installing those packages yet?

I have them running on my Eee PC and it looks quite cool -- lots of crashes, though (as is to be expected).

I think it would be great if there was a Media Centre Remix (http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/9512/), similar to the Netbook Remix.

What about;
Linux MCE
Mythbuntu
Elica MCE
And so on
?

Indeed, there is no extra advantage of making a Ubuntu Media Center edition. If its just a desktop edition with extra programs installed from default, I suggest you to get into work gweaver, its quite easy to make your own .iso with all the preconfiguring you want to do.

I think I'm getting deja vu with your exact same post over threads similar to this.

On topic, I've been procrastinating about installing eeeXubuntu on our eeePC at the office. Now I got another reason to wait more.

Fair enough. I'd love to have been able to merge the threads myself, but decided that posting on multiple threads would be the easiest way to reach people who might be interested.

Apologies for the Deja Vu...

To clarify, I'd envisaged a Ubuntu Media Centre Remix as basically being standard Ubuntu with a desktop that lends itself better to TV viewing (in the style of the netbook remix) and a few minor tweaks here and there so that software can be easily controlled by remote, without the user having to put lots of effort into configuring hot-keys and the like.
I can't see any reason why it should be mutually exclusive with MythTV and all the other media centre software that's out there.

Eee Users,

I'm currently using the default xandros on easy mode. Do the packages in launchpad include the whole ubuntu netbook OS or do I need to install ubuntu and then add on the packages listed on that launchpad page?

<3 thanks

You'll need to install a full 8.04 ubuntu install, then add the PPA Hardy repo in addition to the standard Ubuntu ones. Currently that netbook repo just contains 6 packages, mainly specific configurations.

Can you please tell me which files I need to download exactly and how\from where?

Bear with me please because Im new to Linux and I have no idea what these packages mean etc. etc,

Thanks in advance,
Sam

If you're new to Linux, I personally wouldn't recommend installing these packages, as they're still in heavy development :)

Ahh I see. Are there any plans for the Netbook Remix to be available as an optional upgrade with Ubuntu 8.10?

Cheers,
Sam

I installed Netbook Remix last night. There's a very detailed guide to doing it here that I followed: http://techpad.co.uk/content.php?sid=36

Installed the UME & running OK on my 701 for a while now, but having performance & stability issues.

Still not bad if you have the time & a bit of skill.

Good exercise for a n00b learning the ropes (with a machine 2 spare)
