Why does grub start at stage 1.5????

Why not stage 0 or 1 ??
If they are going with crazy numbers, why not stage Pi?

I'd noticed that too. This is just a guess, but I think it's because there is some stuff that goes on "behind the scenes" before stage 1.5 decides to share its words of wisdom.
