Are there any laptops, custom or otherwise, with a simple character based screen, as in, non-VGA. I know that in the 80s there were some types of computers based on this design. Are there any custom projects out there to run a simple lcd screen on a laptop for using the linux console?

I am just interested to see if this has been done before and how well it worked. Thanks guys!

I think that you can in some way enable a serial console in linux, if you would then via a mcu control a character display mounted as a normal laptop screen I guess that would work, but it sounds like a diy solution as I've never heard of any commersial variants.

It's not a laptop, but is this (http://www.embeddedarm.com/software/arm-netbsd-toaster.php) what you have in mind?

That is exactly the type of diy project I was looking for. And it even makes toast!

EDIT:

I found this from looking at that toaster.

I could just wire an LCD up to that and hook up everything else for my project.
