I ask because my desktop is 64-bit and my laptop is 32-bit. Can I make a disc that can install both?

you can install with LiveUSB or wubi

http://wubi-installer.org/
http://edoceo.com/liber/ubuntu-live-usb

which does not need a DVD.
but in principle it is possible to make a DVD that will let "grub" to choose which version of LiveCD to be booted.

Yeah, that's what I'd like. but I am very new to grub and don;t even know how to unpack the .iso's to put them on the dvd (and not just burn one at a time that is).
