I was considering buying a card of ati, but I wanted to support a company that has made a statement about future open source drivers: http://www.amd.com/us-en/Corporate/VirtualPressRoom/0,,51_104_543~119372,00.html

It is the X2400 Pro 512MB. According to the page it says open source drivers for the X1000 series and HD 2000 series. This one is obviously the X2400. Do you think they mean everything in the X2XXX range? I don't want to buy a card which won't have open source drivers, because if that's the case I can go with a cheap nvidia card.

AMD and ATI have always seemed to be an odd combination to me, on one hand you have AMD who has been a secret partner to linux and on the other hand is ATI who have never seemed one bit interested in linux.
In comparison Nvidia and even Intel have co operated with us with video card support then ATI, with nvidia a long time supporter of linux and intel who has taken a interest in linux as well it seems ati even with AMD backing it is at a snails pace...
You know its kind of sad that it seems that even intel who practically everybody in the linux community doesnt like seems more willing to work with linux then ATI who is now owned by AMD who in the past has supported linux...
its very strange.

why go nvidia then? their opensource drivers are terrible as well, the ati proprietary drivers are descent if youre only using one monitor or 2 like monitors, and nvidias are better if youre using two differnt sized monitors. both of which still suck also.

needless to say, graphics companies suck cause theyre trying to not give away their secrets to competitors, i say suck it up and move on, its not like people are ganna stop buying their products

the open source ati drivers are worse than the closed-source video drivers from nvidia.

Allmost no games run on them http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=ati_r500_gaming&num=1:

A intel card which also has open source drivers and runs games better :)

You are crazy if you do this, IMHO. Just Use what Works!

The nvidia drivers might be closed, but they actualy give better frame rates in linux then in windows in some games this days!

well Nvida support has always been better in linux as nvidia usually provides decent drivers... even if nvidia has proprietary drivers they still have done better for linux then ATI.

Their opensource drivers? Can you give me the page at nvidia making a statement about those drivers? Do you mean Nouveau? (http://free3d.org) (official:http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/)
