When is the Intel LGA775 socket being replaced and will it be backwards compatible?

When is AMD AM3 sockets coming out? How about backward compatibility? Opinions on AM2/+?

I'm stuck between a rock & a hard place as well as being confused.

I would hate to go buy a LGA775 MB/CPU only to find out it is going to be discontinued soon with no upgrade path available to me.

LGA775 has been the "same" for a while, but the chipsets don't support the newer cpus and newer chipsets don't support older cpus. how's that for you? Also, when Intel's new cpu comes out, nehalem i think, it has the memory controller onboard and uses a Hyper Transport like bus, so I'm gonna say it's going to be a new socket. Definitely new boards.

AM3 is supposed to come next year I think, when DDR3 becomes the mainstream, until then it's AM2/+

I think I'm going with an Intel P45 chipset:

It's the last 775 chipset from Intel and supports DDR3 and PCIe 2.0, so it should be good for a couple of years. The firsts boards should be available this month.
