I was reading a NYTimes article and noticed that the monitor of Google chief economist Hal Varian shows the Ubuntu icons. It also looks like a Walmart gPC is on the floor next to him, but I can't be sure.
This is all the endorsement anyone needs. If it's good enough for the top guys at Google, it's good enough for me.

what they have others don't?
a mostly blank landing page:
the main search box and their ever-changing logo plus
just a few small links to other google searches/services

not a pile of crud to avoid
just good searches

if this is what their system produces
it will continue to be my start up page

Google have been using a customised version of Ubuntu as their default in-house OS for a while. Which makes sense really, they're not likely to be lining up to pay Microsoft for Windows licences.

They call it Goobuntu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goobuntu), and have been staunchly ignoring all calls to release it officially.
