These links talk about total domination of the World-Wide-Web and making it a package-based subscription model (like cable tv).

I'd believe it if they said in 40 years, but in 4 years? It sounds like a joke. There's way too many people that could and would stop that from happening. And there would be too many easy ways to bypass it, ISP's wouldn't be able to stop them all. ISP's would not try this unless they were extremely stupid.

So, I mean, even if it isn't a hoax, what the hell? These big corporations only really have power if you fear and agree to them. There is no way they'll be able to make this work.

If it is true, this fails hardcore. What will happen to people who do online console gaming? You need an internet connection for that. Do you have to say, pay for your xbox live, and then pay some other company that doesn't provide xbox live in order to access it?

This is serious! In Norway, we have a (traffic neutral) main hub which is a collaboration between all the ISPs. Not long ago, the biggest ISP was planning to take their traffic to a hub they controlled themselfs. This caused a lot of fuzz in the media, and the threat to net neutrality was pointed out by some observant politicians.

I think and hope that this ISP took the signal. And if they try it again, I hope it will not be surpassed in silence. If I know the politicians - and I actually do know some of them - it will not.

And here's the people that support this type of ridiculous plan.

:lolflag:

Seriously though, this totally sucks. This is not the way to run the Internet. I hope these ISPs have Epic Fail. And I seriously hope this doesn't slip by unnoticed without any opposition to it.

This won't happen. People are used to the way the worldwide network works, and, and imposing limits would only make ISPs that wouldn't do that richer. And of course, ISPs that would do this thing should be bombarded to de*th.

I agree. I haven't seriously researched it, and there are always corporate interests at work -look at the price of gas- but the last poster is right.
Anyone offering open access in the wake of a model shift like this will get rich.

Alarmist junk, nothing more. The rhetoric doesn't even make sense.

Every significant Internet provider around the globe is currently in talks with access and content providers to transform the internet into a television-like medium: no more freedom, you pay for a small commercial package of sites you can visit and you'll have to pay for seperate subscriptions for every site that's not in the package.

The internet != the web.

A quick glance at the user's profile tells you how good they are in "communication".
My bet would be this is an attempt to sell their other "information", if this had an inch of truth in it it'd be a scandal already:

Hello, Messieurs's et Mesdames at wesellstuff.com, we're very sorry but you didn't make it to the top 200 list to be added to our programming, so we we'll be closing your business (there will be no refund on your yearly hostname subscription and people who owe you money won't be accessing your webpage anymore; deal with it [Hint: start a blog on Google or something]).
Yours truly,
The ISPs

If this actually happened, it'd be the end of Linux. Linux thrives on communication.

I can't believed anybody would be stupid enough to even worry about something like this. It cannot happen. Too many loose ends.

Totally agree. Where on earth do these crazy stories come from anyway?

Mental.

I didn't watch the video, I'm at work.

Has anyone considered the fact that the Internet is simply a large network of computers?

If the Internet were taken over by ISPs to become a subscription model or privatized, sufficient funding would provide for a new network, perhaps called Freenet.

Nevertheless, I do download backups of wikipedia in case the world ends.
