So this is my first time trying Ubuntu. I downloaded the 8.04LTS .iso and burned it to a disk. I tested the disk, and was told the disk is fine.

When I try the intall Ubuntu in Windows option, the install fails. About half way through the install process I got a "Windows based Ubuntu installer has encountered a problem and needs to close" warning and the install stopped. In my add/remove programs, Ubuntu is listed, but it's only 0.55 Mb so I uninstalled it. I tried it again with my virus software disabled and got the same error.

Any ideas what the problem might be? I'm still in the "just trying it out phase", so I don't want to have to wipe out my Windows install jsut to test drive Ubuntu.

PC Specs:
Dell Inspiron 8600 (lap top)
Pentium M 1.5 GHz
512 Mb Ram
32 Mb onboard Nvidia graphics
60 Gb Hard drive, (I chose 15 Gb in the Ubuntu installer)
XP with SP 2

Not enough video power? Something else? Help a newbie out.

Thanks!
Eric

Download an iso from here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download
Follow this guide:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto?highlight=%28burn%29%7C%28
Do md5sum, burn at 4x on CD-R
Boot from it. You'll get to a Desktop where you can 'try' Ubuntu.
