HOWTO change file association in gnome

There is a simple way of doing it.

Suppose you want to change the default player for .mp3 files to Mplayer
(assuming that it has been installed).

Just click on an .mp3 file, select

"Open with | Open with Other Application ...".

Choose the desired program from the list (i.e. Mplayer Movie Player).

Mplayer starts playing the file, and gnome automatically changes the default
file association (to .mp3 <=> Mplayer) for future use.

To add to this post, suppose one desires to change the file association for all .mp3 files so that some application opens them automatically when simply double-clicking on the file.

1. Right-click on the file and select 'Properties'.
2. Click on the 'Open With' tab.
3. Select the application from the list that should be the "default" application for this type of file. If the desired application is not in the list, click on 'Add' and select the application.

Hi!

I have tried your two solution with Banshee and Rhythmbox but when I try to open a mp3 file from for example tracker, google desktop or GnomeDo they always choose totem. Do you have any tips?

Maybe I should inform that it works fine with Nautilus
