Can you tell what is wrong with this picture? Credit goes to Distrowatch for pointing this out.

EDIT: Updated the pic, linking from Distrowatch itself was not a wise idea.

It was in this week's DistroWatch Weekly (http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20051024).

All I can say is WOW... this is not a joke! http://owasco.co.tompkins.ny.us/its/index.htm
I would have bet anything to say that was a joke, but I looked on distrowatch and it, sadly, is true! Whoever is responsible for that should be shot. They must have hired a monkey to do this.

Ok maybe they shouldnt be shot, but fired at least. Does anybody know of a contact email or forums where we can inform them of how stupid their IT guy is?

Ha, thats funny ;)

And besides the fact they say IE is more secure, netscape is built on firefox or something like that.

This didn't escape my notice, either. I have linked to it from my blog (http://www.livejournal.com/users/ouij).

I tried getting a hole of the Cornell U. Student LUG (which resides in Tompkins Co, NY) but their website seems to be down.

They have already removed all mention of Firefox and Netscape from the page in question (http://owasco.co.tompkins.ny.us/its/) and disabled their email links. I guess they are starting to get bombarded with correct info and it's become bothersome. :) Maybe they will listen?

BTW, this page (http://www.tompkins-co.org/its/policy/Stnd_probsoft.htm) says to "use the most up to date browser." LOL.

They've probably done that just because it's easier for the network administrators to control than alternative browsers. Not that suprising considering that most network admins are braindead gimps.

I guess it's "money under the table". Noone with a sane mind would put that up.

Though the have remove firefox & Netscape. It still does say

All other browsers must be removed from your computer.

My word, this is one funny site.

What I found really amusing is here: http://owasco.co.tompkins.ny.us/its/policy/Stnd_updtxp.htm

Go down a bit, on the right-hand side, you will see a pic of good ol'Bill in front of a XP sign giving a speech. Propaganda much? I hope they get paid by M$ for this at least.

The reason in which they want us to use Internet Explorer is so they could control us and monitor us more easile. It dosn't surprise me. SOmeday you will see that propaganda in your area... Specially thanks to the Patriot Act.

BTY, look at this: http://www.librarian.net/technicality.html not so related... but, I hope it makes you think of something...

What I would like to know is if these policies and recommendations are only applicable to internal employees of Tompkins County, or if they apply to their public website and the general public. If the latter, someone on these boards who lives in the U.S. should investigate filing a complaint against Tompkins County for possible violation for Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act:

1. Section 508 Law (http://www.section508.gov/index.cfm?FuseAction=Content&ID=3)

2. Accessibility Validator - Document Conformance Tests (http://www.miislita.com/searchito/accessibility-validator.html)

3. Usability.gov (http://usability.gov/accessibility/)

4. Accessibility of State and Local Government Websites to People with Disabilities (http://www.usdoj.gov/crt/ada/websites2.htm)

I'm gonna send them an E-mail, though I don't think I'll get a reply from them.
A good E-mail without rants, name calling or insults, to point out some things.

Greetings.
Regarding the advise given by the excellent IT staff in Tompkins County, I will point out that the advise subject on browsing is incorrect. Many independent investigations made by experts points out the danger of using IE as a web-browser. I'm sure there's talking about a mistake or a misunderstanding and I truly believe that Tomkins County wants the best to insure their citizin with the best web-surfing safty.

With best regards
