upgrade from gutsy to hardy

I've done upgrade from gutsy to hardy according to:

but Gnome won't start.

I get the message, that user home directory is missing.

what's wrong and howto solve this problem ?

Boot Ubuntu in Recovery Mode and post the output of:-

ls /home
