Installation error - Kernel

Shortly after pressing "install Ubuntu" from the boot screen of the CD I get the following message (which "freezes" all processes):

Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

Please anyone - what is this?!?!?!?

I am having this same problem after installing the latest kernel update. The new kernel does not boot, but the previous one works. Any ideas?
